"The human immunodeficiency virus is not, in the strictest sense, a form of life. Until it is inside a host body, it is no more alive than a rock or a stone. It is a protein-coated mass of genetic instructions 150 times smaller than the white blood cell it attacks. After penetrating, it multiplies until the cell bursts and dies. This continues for years. Cell by cell, the virus destroys its carrier's immune system. Untreated, the per*** becomes ill from a series of infections that are progressively serious and rare, and finally fatal. This is AIDS." On the 25th anniversary of the first diagnosed cases of AIDS, FRONTLINE ex***nes one of the worst pandemics the world has ever known in "The Age of AIDS." After a quarter century of political denial and social stigma, of stunning scientific breakthroughs, bitter policy battles and inadequate prevention campaigns, HIV/AIDS continues to spread rapidly throughout much of the world, particularly in developing nations. To date, some 30 million people worldwide have already died of AIDS. I highly recommend this documentary. In my option, this is by far the best, most comprehensive, and most informative depiction of the epidemic I've seen. This was originally a two part feature on Frontline.
